Black Country Communion – Michael Schenker – Leeds Academy 26 July 2011

Another night another version of MSG, it’s great to Michael Shenker on stage playing guitar. The show tonight features some MSG classics some new stuff, some Scorpions and of course some UFO, when Pete Way joins the band on stage. An all to brief 45 minutes ended with Doctor, Doctor. I must just mention the multi talented Michael Voss who I became aware of through his Silver project. He did a great job fronting the band with good vocals and it was pleasure to see him live and finally thanks to both Michaels, Voss and Schenker, for signing the CD sleeves.
I’m the only one at Rockgig who’d not seen Black Country Communion was all the hype true; would it be worth the wait? Well in one simple word – YES. This is what rock n roll is all about Glenn Hughes was like the king of the castle strutting his stuff all around the stage, Joe Bonamassa played the role of guitar god with ease, Jason Bonham drove every song with energy and purpose and Derek Sherinan’s keyboards gave the songs depth. I loved it all and when they finished the final song Burn I would have loved to have seen another hour and a half, but that would just have been greedy. How long this band will continue is anyone’s guess but if you like rock music you would love this show.

Iron Maiden – Airbourne – Sheffield Arena 24 July 2011

Sheffield arena is sold out for tonight’s show. Airbourne give a great account of themselves and get a great response from the crowd who lap up the no-nonsense rock n roll they deliver.

After what seems like the longest intro ever Iron Maiden hit the stage to the title track from the latest CD The Final Frontier, during this track I’ve moved a good 10 foot forward of my original starting position as the crowd surges forward. Without a pause we are into El Dorado, the sound is great, just few times Bruce gets slightly lost in the mix. Two Minutes to Midnight keep the set moving along nicely. This is a band who are on top of there game and know what the paying punter what’s. This British metal at it’s best, with everyone seeming to know ever word to every song. For the encore we have Number of the Beast, Hallowed be Thy Name and Running Free. By the end I am shattered and everyone around me seems to have had great night.

Support on all the UK dates will be Lincoln's Knock Out Kaine www.knockoutkaine.com who recently played the Download Festival @ Donington.
Here's some info on Knock Out Kaine:
Dean Foxx - Lead Vocals, Acoustic Guitars
Jimmy Bohemian - Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals
Lee F Burn - Bass, Backing Vocals
Danny Krash - Drums
In a music industry of happy smiling scene bands that are predominately size zero boys that may or may not be just out of nappies, Knock Out Kaine remain unfashionably cool with their middle digit firmly raised to the trend setters & followers alike.

Winning KERRANG!’s Best Unsigned Live Act 2007/2008 was an acknowledgement that the band had their live performance down, they have spent most of 2009/2010 touring both in the UK and in Europe. Their brand new EP “KANDYKAINE” was recorded in June 2010 at Chapel studios. 2011 is set to be Knock Out Kaine’s debut to the wider world. From the Nasty n’ sleazy “Little Crystal” to the out and out Rock N’ Roll Monster “Set The Night On Fire” Knock Out Kaine proudly stand for decadence, rebellion and having a damn good time!

Judas Priest, Queensryche and Rival Sons, BIC Bournemouth 24th July 2011

After some pre-show entertainment on the seafront that consisted of a) trying to get the broken ticket machine in the car park to accept our cash b) finding a near exact replica of my old Capri (Electric Blue, 3 litre Ghia fact fans), c) ignoring the Salvation Army trying to "save us" and best of all d) some very entertaining women's beach volleyball, ME and I shuffled our worn out  and broken bodies into the BIC to watch the show.  My first time at the BIC (apart from the bar) and I was very impressed. It seems to have more width than depth, so no matter where you are, you're pretty close to the action.

First up: Rival Sons.  I've heard a few tracks before thanks to the freebie EP from Classic Rock and although it sounded good, it didn't really grab my attention. However, their early doors, brief set was a blinder with Jay Buchanan strutting around looking like the bastard son of prime time Jim Morrison and Robert Plant. They have a big sound for band comprising simply of 3 instruments, with Scott Holiday's guitar sounding very fat and filling the room nicely.  Apparently Rival Sons don't like to be called "retro" and I can understand why, but like it or not their sound is the sound of classic 70's rock bands brought into 21st century. I really enjoyed their short set and will definitely give that freebie cd another shot.

Next up: Queensryche. Apparently their new album is a bit on the eclectic side (or "bloody awful" according to some bloke behind us) but the opening track from it sounded like classic Queensryche tonight. The band were tight and whilst it was another fairly short set we had quite a diverse mixture of songs, ranging from the new album, back to the really early stuff and of course some classics from the Operation:Mindcrime/Empire era. including a brilliant version of Eyes of a Stranger. Excellent stuff.

Just prior to Priest coming on stage the DJ (yes we had Lady Starlight all the way from Noo Yoik on the Wheels of Steel) played War Pigs.. this has to be one of the best impromptu singalongs I've been involved in - everyone and I mean everyone- sang along.. then after one verse - on came Judas Priest.

I have a bit of a problem with Priest. I saw them a few years ago in London after having had a particularly bad day at the office, the sound was shite, Rob Halford looked like he was eating a badger and he clumped about the stage like his legs were in plaster casts and the rest of the band looked like they were simply going through the motions... I was ready to go home after about 30 mins.  HOWEVER, this time round I was well up for it. The crowd were in good voice, we had Richie Faulkner in place of KK and Rob (whilst still looking like he's eating a badger) had ditched the concrete boots. This time the gig only seemed to last 30 mins, but they were onstage for well over 2 hours, going through their back catalogue with Rob talking to the crowd between tracks. We had smoke bellowing chimneys,  flame throwers and lasers galore. We had Rob changing jacket every song, we had the Harley, frankly we had some Spinal Tap moments too, but it's all part of the charm of Judas Priest's Unashamed Heavy Metal.

The crowd lapped it up. Rob never sang a word during "Breaking The Law" it was all sung by the "Heavy Metal Maniacs of Bournemouth" (who knew ?). Set list is below, but special mention to excellent versions of "Diamonds and Rust" and "Beyond the Realms of Death".

If that's to be their last show in the UK then they went out in style.

"Dump the Chump" - Dokken reunite minus Don.

According to Peter Hodgson at Gibson.comThe planned classic-era Dokken reunion now may be off the table, but that hasn’t stopped three quarters of the band from getting together to lay down some tracks, both old and new, and taking a little dig at the missing member in the process.

George Lynch has told Classic Rock Revisited that he has formed a new band with Dokken alumni Jeff Pilson (bass) and “Wild” Mick Brown (drums) called Tooth and Nail, named after a Dokken album. “That’s Dokken without Don,” Lynch explained. “The record is called Dump the Chump.”
Pilson, who now plays in Foreigner, is a very capable vocalist, taking the mic for the brilliant Lynch/Pilson album Wicked Underground in 2005. “When the Dokken reunion was not going to happen we just said, ‘Why don’t we just do this? This is way cooler,’” Lynch told Classic Rock Revisited. “Many years later, we are doing it and it is just for fun. It is half new material and it is half old Dokken material.”
Lynch says Tooth and Nail have already started recording, and will finish work on Dump the Chump around the end of the year, after his and Pilson’s schedules have cleared

Rusty Pacemaker – Blackness and White Light

Rusty Pacemaker (not his real name you’ll be surprised to hear) comes from Austria. He written all of the songs on this CD and played the majority of the instruments. The CD seems to have been a real labour of love with the opening track, Cell, originally being penned in 2003.
What comes out throughout the CD is the quality of the song writing with each track being well constructed. The CD is really well produced and features a wide variety of sounds ranging from the standard heavy rock guitars to the gentle sound of the xylophone on the title track. Add to this the rain effect and the bird sounds and you have one interesting collect of songs that drag you through the dark world of Rusty Pacemaker.

If there is a weak point it is Rusty’s vocals for me, they don’t quite hit the standard of the rest of the CD. I would have liked to have heard more of female vocalist Lady K who is featured on Amok and Mother.
This is no album of catchy fist waving songs, to be honest the CD does take a bit of getting into, and it’s very different to what I normally listen to. I’ve been playing it in the car for the best part of six weeks before writing this, but it is well worth the effort as the CD is really is a grower so if you get a copy of it be prepared to invest some time getting in to the songs because it really is worth it.
You can find out more on this interesting project and have listen to some of the tracks at the Rusty Pacemaker web site.

Kevin Shirley to produce new Europe album.

EUROPE, Sweden's biggest rock band, confirm their next studio album, slated for April 2012 release, will be produced by the world's hottest rock record producer, Kevin Shirley.

No stranger to the crème de la crème of iconic rock records, Shirley’s produced albums for Iron Maiden, Joe Bonamassa, Black Country Communion, Black Stone Cherry and Journey.

"We still feel we have one hell of a rock record to make" says Europe's singer Joey Tempest. "Kevin’s the man for the job. We love his work with Bonamassa, Black Country Communion, and Black Stone Cherry. He's the real deal. We're ready to do some serious damage."
Last week Europe met up with Shirley in Stockholm to discuss the direction of the next album. Based on reactions from the fans and media, Europe's 2009 album ‘Last Look at Eden’ proved to be the band's most important record since ‘The Final Countdown’.  “I’ve been a big fan of Europe's work for many years," says Shirley. “The band is influential and highly underrated. I can't wait to make the upcoming album their most explosive to date."

After summer 2011, Europe will finish the promotion of Last Look at Eden tour, and will start to focus their energy on the next album produced by Shirley.  “We've toured for one and a half years" adds Tempest. "It’s time to write and record some new songs and get back on the road again in 2012."

The new material suggests a more straight forward rock approach evident in ‘Doghouse’ - a new song Europe performed on their recent UK tour. The song is also featured on Europe’s upcoming ‘Europe: Live at Shepherd’s Bush’ DVD, released August 2011 on earMUSIC CDs and DVDs.

earMUSIC is also about to release a limited deluxe book with pictures be Denis O'Regan. "Live Look At Eden" features exclusive live audio and the stunning performance at last year iTunes Festival in London.  Recording for Europe's new album begins in Stockholm on October 3rd, for an April 2012 release

Threshold - The Peel, Kingston - 1 July 2011

One day all bands should play here!

Holds 200, no windows and a tiny stage but hot and sweaty and very close and personal.

With the band finally starting to record a new cd with returning vocalist Damien Wilson, they are playing a few shows to help with the studio fever.

This is what they played:

Slipstream
The Ravages Of Time
Long Way Home
The Destruction Of Words
Hollow
Sanity’s End
Falling Away
Clear (acoustic)
Ground Control (played full band but with Karl Groom on acoustic and Pete Morten playing some very tasty electric solo’s)
Pressure
The Art Of Reason
This Is Your Life
Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams
Mission Profile
Encores of One Degree Down
Light And Space

2 hours went past in a flash.

A perfect gig. The crowd singing every word and the band playing a blinder and such interaction. In fact Damian spent nearly as much time in the crowd as on the stage.

So many highlights

The acoustic section worked fantastically but everyone wanted heavy.
Johanne James on drums was a blur the word powerhouse was made for him.

Richard West on keys and Steve Anderson on bass held it all together leaving Pete and Karl to riff to their hearts content.

Karl Groom is a total star, he is so underrated but his melodic soloing with Pete riffing away is just a joy! Also a top man and apologizing after knocking the microphone stand off the stage with me catching it saying he wasn’t trying to kill me!!

A fantastic evening that could have gone on forever.

Surely Britain’s best underground band.

10/10
