Foreigner - Acoustique

Acoustique has given Foreigner a chance to strip ten of their classic track down to basics and have some fun along the way. Long, Long Way from Home and Cold as Ice introduce the listener to the laid back world of this CD with Kelly Hansen really coming to the fore in this minimalist mix. Some tracks like Starrider (which contains a great sax solo from Tom Gimbel) and Waiting for Girl Like You seemed obvious treatment for the acoustic treatment, but I was surprised to see Juke Box hero on the track listing. How would this fair as an acoustic track? Well I have to say very, very well. Sweeping Violas and violins replace the ripping guitar solo of the original. The final acoustic number on the CD is a great version of the Elvis Presley classic That’s All Right.

Three non acoustic tracks complete the CD. The first is new song, Save Me, and the second a new version of I Want To Know What Love Is (I expected to see that amongst the acoustic tracks). Both of these have been taken from the expanded Acoustic and More package. The final bonus track is When it Comes to Love from the 2010 CD Can’t Slow Down.
To be honest it took me a few listens to get into the songs in this unfamiliar format, but after a few plays of the songs take on their new image and are a welcome addition to Foreigner family of songs.

Girlschool - Hit & Run Revisited

30 years after the release of the original Hit and Run album Girlshool have returned to the studio to rerecord Hit and Run Revisited and a mighty fine job they have made of it as well. Modern recording technology has allowed the band to produce a massive almost “live” sound that drives through each of these classic NWOBHM tracks.

C’mon Let’s Go has a real urgency, The Hunter has a big rift driving throughout and the message contained within Following the Crowd is still as apt today as it was when it was originally written in 1981. The only cover on the album, Tush has been given raw rocky edge on this recording. The title track features twice on this revisited CD firstly the rerecording with just Girlschool and then as one of two bonus tracks where it features the mighty vocal talents of Doro, a real highlight. Yeah Right has been brought up to date with a rescripting of the adlib comments before the guitar solo. Future Flash finishes the tracks from the original Hit and Run before two bonus tracks, one being the afore mentioned Hit and Run with Doro, and the other a great rerecording of Demolition Boys from Girlschool’s debut album.
This 2011 Revisited version of Hit and Run sits as great companion to the original, which was one of the first NWOBHM albums I bought, and I would really recommend getting a copy.

TRACK LISTING:
01 C‘mon Let‘s Go
02 The Hunter
03 (I’m Your) Victim
04 Kick It Down
05 Following the Crowd
06 Tush
07 Hit and Run
08 Watch Your Step
09 Back to Start
10 Yeah Right
11 Future Flash
BONUS TRACKS
12 Demolition Boys
13 Hit and Run (featuring Doro).

Mr Big - 02 Academy Birmingham - 18/09/11

First up to a sizeable Sunday evening crowd was Kristy Gallacher. No not the Sky Sports presenter a Coventry based singer/songwriter.
She played a 25 minute 6 song set on the acoustic and what a wonderful voice.  Signed to Broken Player Records each song gave her the chance to show off the voice which they did and it was enjoyed by all.
I never thought I would see Mr Big as we missed them supporting Extreme way back but after 2009's wonderful reunion show at Shepherd's Bush here they are on a 6 date UK tour in support of this years quite brilliant "What If" cd.
Over the course of 2 and a quarter hours Eric, Paul, Pat and Billy hit the heights.  Here's what they played:

Daddy Brother Little Boy
Alive and Kickin'
Green Tinted Sixties Mind
Undertow
American Beauty
Just Take My Heart
One Upon A Time
For You (with extended Paul and Billy jam)
A Little Too Loose
Road To Ruin
Temperamental
Paul Gilbert guitar solo
Still Ain't Enough For Me
Price You Gotta Pay
Take A Walk
Around The World
As Far As I Can See
Billy Sheehan bass solo
Addicted To That Rush
Encores of To Be With You
Colorado Bulldog
Smoke On The Water (all swapped instruments Paul onto drums, Billy onto vocal then guitar ,Eric onto guitar then bass and Pat onto bass the vocals)
Baba O 'Riley (Who cover)

Seeing them in a small club was fantastic and being so close to Paul Gilbert was a joy. Being close you could see all the little extra bits he adds to all the songs and what a guitarist - Wow. On the other side was Billy Sheehan on lead bass and again - Wow. No normal bass runs for him.
Yes they overplay but when you are that good show off a bit. Considering they never spoke for over 15 years the interplay between the 2 of them is magical and both seem to be really enjoying being back together. Whereas before the ego's got in the way now they can't stop smiling.
Pat Torpey on drums keeps time letting the others go off on their way but never sweats even when the walls were in the club!!
Eric Martin is the perfect engaging host and what a voice. And the backing vocals were spot on too.
In comparison to the last tour we got 6 off the new cd with "Undertow" the first single being greeted like an old favourite and 2 older tracks off "Lean To It" "A Little Too Loose" and "Road to Ruin" being played too.
A quite brilliant evening and with all the love on stage and off we can only hope we get more music from this much loved band.

David Coverdale celebrates his 60th birthday on September 22nd

"I've retired more times than Frank Sinatra - but it never last for very long..."

Legendary Whitesnake singer David Coverdale is going to celebrate his 60th birthday on September 22nd. His latest studio record "Forevermore", released on March 25th, shows experience, musical maturity and a personality that is far from jaded after an almost 40 year career. Also it is an evidence that Whitesnake’s career is far from finished, even if Coverdale evoked the end quite a few times in the last years: "I've retired more times than Frank Sinatra - but luckily I didn’t tell many people.” he laughs.” The music business can be so exhausting & destructive on a person, which makes you think sometimes, that you have to step back & take stock of your situation & circumstances", Coverdale confessed.

Today David Coverdale is happy that he never threw totally stepped away. He recently wrote a song called "Best Years" that he says still perfectly fits describes his life with him turning 60 years old. He explains: "It's great that I'm able to still work as a musician. And with it came consistency in my career and also in my private life. I really am experiencing the best times of my life these days, & believe me, I've seen a lot."
"Forevermore" is Whitesnake's eleventh album released on Frontiers Records. The band is still known as one of the most successful acts of all times with several platinum awards. Through his eloquent, always cultivated, British-charming personality David Coverdale is not only known as a rock patron, but a highly regarded gentlemen within the rock business. There are not many other musicians that deal with love and passion in their lyrics like he does. And also there are just a few acts that are able to highlight lyrics perfectly and successfully with thrilling blues and soul anthems like he does.
Before Coverdale, who’s originally from Saltburn-by-Sea area, founded Whitesnake, he was the lead vocalist for Deep Purple. When Coverdale celebrates his 60th birthday on September 22nd he's able to look back at a musical career that is almost 40 years long. "I’m going to celebrate my birthday with my private family & my musical family", he reveals, "I will party several times on several different continents. Even if it sounds a little un-rock & roll, I will use the day to reflect and be thankful for what I achieved in my life so far. I'm incredibly grateful to still be experiencing professional success & to be so physically active in what I do, after all these years."

Voodoo Six - new digital EP and UK Tour

One of our favourite bands: Voodoo Six,  are set to release a much-anticipated new EP entitled ‘Falling Knives’ in digital format on November 28.  The EP, which will be a special limited edition release, will be available to fans until the end of February.  The band will precede the release by kicking off their 14-date UK tour in Leicester on November 17.  The tour will finish with a set at this year’s sold-out Hard Rock Hell V Festival in Prestatyn.

The Falling Knives EP comes following the success of last year’s album ‘Fluke?’ which was mixed by uber studio engineer Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Aerosmith, Metallica, Yngwie Malmsteen), and boasted the talent of brand new vocalist and front man Luke Purdie.  Metal Hammer journalist Dave Ling awarded the album a 7/10, meriting Luke for his ‘monstrous, rich and bluesy set of pipes that would have been right at home in Lynyrd Skynyrd or Molly Hatchet’.  Kerrang’s Steve Beebee rated Fluke? 4/5 ‘K’s’ stating “you can’t play this type of Southern-fried riff-and-hook rock with anything other than talent, drive and purpose - something that Voodoo Six have in abundance.” After an extensive UK tour including supports with legendary British hard rock stalwarts UFO, Voodoo Six sprang into 2011 with another set of dates supporting flamboyant ex-Hanoi Rocks star Michael Monroe.

The new EP will feature three brand new tracks, the eponymous 'Falling Knives', 'Sharp Sand', and 'Stop', as well as three re-worked and re-recorded versions of tracks from the band’s debut album ‘First Hit For Free’, featuring the driving influence of Luke’s illustrious, raunchy vocals. Just type Voodoo Six into the "Search the Rockgig Archives" box over on the right of this page to find our reviews of their live gigs.

Limehouse Lizzy - Bradford Rio's 17th September 2011

Opening up with Jailbreak, Limehouse Lizzy treated us to great evening of Thin Lizzy songs. The set featured all the hits and more. Through out the sound was excellent and the tempo the band maintained kept the packed crowd rocking all night. As well as being a tribute to Phil Lynott the band also dedicated a couple of songs to the late, great Gary Moore, including Out in the Fields.

Highlights for me were of course Emerald; Boys are Back in Town and South Bound where Limehouse and the crowd have some real fun with the coyote call.

The only down side for me was that I had to drink lager all night because there was no beer on tap.

If you’ve not seen Limehouse Lizzy before make the effort to go and see a great band performing a great tribute to the music of Phil Lynott. You can find details of future dates on their official website.

Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa "Don't Explain" - review & solo tour dates

"Don't Explain" is the first cd to feature Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Beth Hart and, surely the hardest working man in music, Joe Bonamassa.
It is released in the UK and Europe on Monday the 26th of September on Provogue Records.
Produced by Joe's right hand man and producer of the moment; Kevin Shirley, "Don't Explain" is an intimate hand picked collection of soul cover songs as performed by celebrated artists such as Ray Charles, Tom Waits, Bill Withers, Etta James and Aretha Franklin.
Joe brought the band that produced the 2009 cd "The Balld Of John Henry" to play on the cd which was Anton Fig on drums, Blondie Chaplin on guitar,Carmine Rojas on bass and Arlan Scheirbaum on keyboards.

Recorded in only 4 days, the cd showcases two  talents that work so well together.
Beth's emotive soulful voice shines throughout and it also gives us a chance to see Joe doing yet another style of music.
After the hard rock of BCC this shows he really can do it all. It is a real struggle to pick out highlights in a cd that is full of them. "Sinners Prayer"and "Chocolate Jesus" has Beth at the fore and she makes the songs her own especially at the end of "Chocolate Jesus" where you can pretty much see the sweat on her brow as she gets the last drop out of the vocal. Brilliant.

"For My Friend" (the Bill Withers song) has a big blues riff and with Beth hitting the notes Joe 's wonderful solo towards the end finishes the song off in style.
Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind" is quite wonderful. Just over 8 minutes of music that the whole world should hear. Beth's vocals build through the song as she puts more and more into laying her soul down and Joe's solo builds to a crescendo and has so much emotion in it when the song ends you want to put it on again and again.

"Somethings' Got A Hold On Me" another Etta James song is the most upbeat song on the cd with a great fun feel and another superb Beth vocal. "I'll Take Care Of You" has Joe's solo as the highlight towards the end of the song. "Well Well"sees a the pair trading vocals and "Ain't No Way"ends the cd in style with Joe's train style riff at the start holding the song before Beth hits another vocal with pure emotion.

A quite wonderful cd that deserves to be heard by all and one that should see greater recognition for two exceptional talents that we can only hope leads to Hart/Bonamassa 2.

Beth Hart will be performing two intimate solo UK gigs (sadly no Joe as far as we know) in November. The first date will be The Flowerpot, Derby on Monday 28th November, followed by London Dingwalls on Tuesday 29th November. Tickets for both concerts are available from 0845 413 4444, www.seetickets.com, www.ticketline.com and www.alt-tickets.co.uk

Tracer - Spaces In Between album review & tour dates

"Spaces In Between" is the new cd from power trio Tracer who hail from Adelaide South Australia.
After 2 independent releases and 2 international tours the cd is released in the UK on October the 3rd through Cool Green Recordings.

So what do they sound like?A heady mix of 70's classic rock and 90's stoner rock with undercurrent's of Black Sabbath/Led Zeppelin/Queens Of The Stone Age with a vocalist with an almighty roar with hints of Chris Cornell or Josh Homme but who sound current like they are seasoned pro's not 3 young lads.

Michael (guitar and vox) and Leigh Brown (bass and vocals) and drummer Andre Wise have created a passionate cd that they have put their collective heart and soul into that deserves to be heard by everyone.

First track and single "Too Much" sets the scene from the word go with a huge riff, huge chorus and an instant classic song. It will go down a storm live. (You can download it for free here & see the video at the end of this review)

Something that sets them apart is they understand that sometimes less is more. Throughout the cd there are some quieter moments so when they explode it hits even harder. Light and shade can work as well as just a wall of noise.
"Push"has a big Queens Of The Stone Age vibe with a big chorus and great solo at the outro.
"Walk Alone"has a  heavy drum beat at it's core and superb bluesy vocal which shows the light and shade formula off so well.
"Louder Than This" has a huge vocal over heavy throbbing riff which turns into a bluesy stomp with an excellent guitar solo.

"Devil Ride" again will go down a storm live with its heavy opening riff and then again the use of light and shade before an enormous build up to the huge riff and chorus. Brilliant.
"The Bitch"has a Sabbath/Queens Of The Stone Age vibe with a huge riff and the musical interlude over the end of the second chorus leads into another excellent solo.
"Voice In The Rain" is a longer slower song which gives Michael a real chance to shine with a superb vocal and I love the vocal guitar interplay during the last 30 seconds.
In fact on a couple of songs the guitar solo's don't start at the end of the second chorus like usual songs but the solo's start during the chorus which is different but comes across so well.
The title track "Spaces In Between" again uses the light and shade formula brilliantly with another huge chorus and a picked slightly Arabic feel to the solo.
"Dead Inside" uses the solo over the chorus effect to the max and is a real highlight and again will be a winner in the live show.
"Save My Breath" has a big driving riff/groove and build to another huge chorus and again the solo starts over the chorus to great effect and carries onto the end in brilliant style.
"All In My Head" has a slower slightly grungy vocal effect but big guitars at the chorus kick in and yet another excellent solo.
Cd closer "Won't Let It Die(Run Mary)" starts with an acoustic guitar and vocal but soon builds into a bluesy stomp with a huge solo.

In closing I cannot recommend this cd enough and look forward to seeing and hearing more  from them in the future.

Mark them down "As One to Watch" - ME

Girlschool - Hit and Run Revisited

In 1981 I was lucky enough to see the fabulous Girlschool on the Hit and Run tour and now the best rock album ever recorded by an all girl band, Girlschool, celebrates 30 years of cranium crunching rock, with a 2011 re-recording of their classic New Wave of British Heavy Metal 1981 album Hit and Run - Revisited. Released on the 26th September through Wacken Records through UDR, the album features 2 bonus tracks including a newly recorded version of Demolition Man from their debut album and a duet with Doro. Hit and Run Revisited will be available in 3 formats: digipack CD, Vinyl LP and digital download.

There are a very limited number of rock albums that have stood the test of time. Only true masterpieces continue to sound fresh and exciting years after their release. The reason for their cult status: the songs are timeless and the album’s sound has captured the magic of the moment perfectly. Girlschool’s second album, Hit And Run, which hit the UK charts at no. 5 was such a classic.
The band line-up is amazingly the same as it was in 1981, apart from Jackie Chambers who replaced the late Kelly Johnson. Enid Williams on bass, drummer Denise Dufort and Kim McAuliffe vocals and guitars, who says about the album “We’ve made quite a few changes. But I’m not gonna say anything about them because we’re hoping that our fans will notice for themselves, just to see how well they know the original ones. Of course it’s a different sound, we have Jackie playing now, obviously, instead of Kelly, and also again, studio-wise it’s just a completely different experience because the technology now is incredible compared to what we had in those days.”
TRACK LISTING:

01 C‘mon Let‘s Go
02 The Hunter
03 (I’m Your) Victim
04 Kick It Down
05 Following the Crowd
06 Tush
07 Hit and Run
08 Watch Your Step
09 Back to Start
10 Yeah Right
11 Future Flash
BONUS:
12 Demolition Boys
13 Hit And Run (feat. Doro)

Girlschool have 2 UK dates scheduled in December - Hard Rock Hell V on 2nd and Saltash Livewire on 3rd – more to come.

Danny says: "Ben and I visited a secondary school a little while ago to give a talk to a load of 15 year old music students. Having agreed to do it, we were a bit apprehensive, and thought it might be a bit dull for them, having 2 old gits spouting on about the music business and touring etc, but we were wrong, they loved it. That started us thinking, always dangerous, the next thing we were doing some shows. Lord help us all...."
Ben says: "I’ve always enjoyed doing interviews with Danny, I didn’t get the opportunity that often but when we did it was always a lot of fun, that’s when I could get a word in edgeways! We seem to have the knack of making each other laugh, so we thought it would be a great idea to see if we could do the same in front of an audience. If all else fails we’ll play them a song or two and do a runner..."
A very civilised and fun evening for all, the perfect antidote to the New Year Blues...

Foreigner release Acoustique on 26 September 2011

After a triumphant tour with Journey that saw Foreigner play to tens of thousands of new fans and earn great critical acclaim, Foreigner announces the release of a brand new album, ‘Acoustique’.

Foreigner first saw success throughout the world with their ground breaking debut album that featured chart hits such as ‘Feels Like The First Time’ and ‘Cold As Ice’, and scored multi platinum sales and a world tour. The band went on to sell over 70 million albums, driven by some of the most important songs in the Classic Rock era. ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ was a worldwide number one hit and ‘Waiting For A Girl Like You’ is in the Top 50 Billboard magazine’s All Time Greatest Pop Songs. The rocking side of Foreigner was always key to their success, and songs like ‘Hot Blooded’, ‘Dirty White Boy’, ‘Urgent’ and ‘Juke Box Hero’ took the band to new levels.

‘Acoustique’ will be released on Edel’s international rock label, earMUSIC distributed in the UK & and Republic of Ireland by Absolute via Universal on  26September. It takes a fresh look at some of Foreigner’s hits and offers some unique surprises. The stripped down version of these great songs shows Foreigner in an entirely new light, and the release will be supported by unplugged tour dates and multiple television appearances. Foreigner inject new life into all their hits, pay tribute to Elvis Presley with a unique recording of ‘That’s All Right’ and throw in a couple of previously unreleased tracks. ‘The Flame Still Burns’ was co-written by Mick Jones for 1998 cult rock movie, ‘Still Crazy’, where it was performed by Jimmy Nail. Mick won the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for that song. The album features a brand new song, ‘Save Me’, which was co-written with Mick Jones’ step-daughter and well-known DJ and musician, Samantha Ronson.

‘Acoustique’ will also be available in a special limited edition box set that includes a DVD and a CD of brand new digital recordings of Foreigner’s greatest hits by the current line-up. The DVD features a full-length live concert in high definition that was recorded in Chicago earlier this year and some bonus features that include one of Foreigner’s first acoustic performances at Schloss Kronberg in Frankfurt that inspired the making of the Acoustique CD.

‘Acoustique’ features Mick Jones on guitars and vocals; Kelly Hansen, lead vocals and percussion; Jeff Pilson, guitars and vocals and Tom Gimbel, guitars, saxophone and vocals. The quartet is joined by Michael Bluestein on keyboards and vocals, and Mark Schulman on drums for the digital recordings of the hits and the DVD.

Talking about the special edition box set Mick Jones said “When doing the ‘Hot Blooded’ solo I did my damnedest to set the amp on fire, which is what originally happened,” Mick says laughing, “I turned it up to 11, I kicked it. . . “

“My feeling over the years is that if you can write a song on an acoustic instrument, and it sounds good, you know you have a good song,” Mick explains. “The first time we approached these songs this way I was flabbergasted about how well they adapted back to their nucleus. It’s been an eye opener how stripping the songs bare brings fresh meaning and emotion out of them. The reaction has been so strong that it made me rethink the whole thing and put more attention to the unplugged show. People feel the intimacy, I talk about the songs and how they came about.”
"Its' been 6 years since the new line-up has been in place. The success, for me, merited giving the public studio recordings of songs by the new band,” Mick Jones asserts. “People know the new Foreigner, so the Foreigner they see live is the same Foreigner they can get on record."

Singer Kelly Hanson said that "This is an extra rubber stamp on our claim to these songs You are constantly having to re-establish yourself. There was a time in the late 90s when the band suffered in reputation, and I think we've spent a good part of the last six years going all over the world to re-establish that this band is very strong and relevant and full of great songs."

"We were doing these live acoustic shows that were being broadcast," he recalls, "and we got a huge response. It was kind of shocking and surprising, and also something that was really new for us. We've never really done that, kind of laying yourself out naked, without lights and amps or anything. It was a real different feeling and a challenge, so we came back and decided to record it. We're still working out the details for touring but it should be interesting,"
Rockgig hope to be able to bring you review of Acoustique soon, and if we keep our figures crossed we may be able to bring you an interview as well.

Tom Fuller Band - "Ask"

As you can see from the usual suspects that I go to see or review should I really like this cd?

The Paul McCartney influence drew me in as the Fab 4 area  guilty pleasure of mine and I'm really glad that I did.
What we have is a powerpop, Beatles influenced, American classic rock cd that although easy listening hits hard when it needs to and leaves you wanting to play it again and again.

With hints of Tom Petty and Cheap Trick too this is a cd that should be all over radio stations on both sides of the Atlantic.

Each song has it's own story and with Tom's vocals at the heart of it, every spin draw's you in to the infectious melodies and hooks and melodic guitar parts that made you like this music in the first place.

Favourite's include the impassioned vocals on "Hell Fire Angel",the drum led rhythm's of opener "Lovers",the classic stop/start riff of "Merci Beaucoup",the huge chorus and riff on"Morphine Maureen" with it's Wings style musical interlude and guitar solo and the closer "Garden Dreaming Days"which should have a guest appearance with Tom's hero Mr.McCartney on it unless he already is if you catch my drift.

A real surprise for me here but one that I'm so glad I took the musical journey with and I for one look forward to seeing the man's star rise.

Black Country Communion to Release Double Concert DVD “Live Over Europe” on October 24, 2011.

The 2-DVD live set was filmed with 14 HD cameras and 5.1 surround sound during the band’s debut tour in the summer of 2011. Over three nights, playing to packed venues in the German cities of Hamburg, Munich and Berlin, the 18-song set list (17 originals and 1 cover) hits on both of BCC’s albums – 2010’s debut and 2011’s sophomore release 2, whichThe Sunday Mercury praised, “This is classic rock goes large, an album that lives up to its heritage. It may not be bettered this year.” Live Over Europe highlights include the songs “Black Country,” “One Last Soul,” “Save Me,” “Man In The Middle,” “Cold,” and “Song of Yesterday,” which fans can sign up to receive as a free audio track download, available Sept. 8, here – http://bit.ly/bcclive. Bonus features include an exclusive 28-page collector’s booklet and DVD with a 20-minute “behind the scenes” featurette and photo collection.
Producer Kevin Shirley explains, “We saw that this live act could be an awesome force of nature to behold; one that promised legendary performances like those of our heroes of Classic Rock. The plan was to get them out there for the entire world to hear. Records allow a certain musical finesse, but live performance promises so much in the very transient nature of a gig; chances are taken, boundaries are crossed and the most exciting performances explode. Two studio albums built a repertoire big enough for a full concert which allowed us to unleash the monster for all the world to see and feel.”
BCC recently completed their debut tour, visiting a select number of cities in North America and Europe. On June 10, the band played to a near sold-out crowd in Anaheim, CA where The Orange County Register exclaimed, “The four members of BCC truly recast the heavy rock of the ’60s and ’70s and yank it into the 21st century as well as anyone in recent memory.” At the Wolverhampton Civic Hall, The Birmingham Mail called their performance “rip-roaring” and “breath-taking.”
As part of J&R Adventures’ strategy to use social media as an integral part of the initial marketing launch of Live Over Europe, they created the Facebook BCC Event Page. Facebook members can join the page here http://on.fb.me/loebcc to receive an exclusive glimpse of the new DVD and a chance to download the live free track “Song of Yesterday.”
