Never tired of the road, British metal gods Saxon will be returning to the UK for the second time this year with a string of live shows in December and all of here rockgig are looking forward to it. We were lucky enough to witness great shows at Leeds and Bristol earlier in the year.
Saxon are hot on the heels of a US tour in support of their latest acclaimed release ‘Call to Arms’, where both album and shows replicated the success already enjoyed in the UK with public and critics alike. “This is probably the best album we’ve written and recorded in the last 20 years,” states Biff Byford unapologetically, ”It’s the perfect embrace of our past with a great modern edge.”
Lead vocalist and main man Biff Byford keeps leading the pack and mesmerizing audiences with his performances, never shy of energy, drive and enthusiasm. "It doesn't matter if we are playing for 90,000 people or 2000 people, as long as they are there to see us play, we are happy," Byford recently commented. Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt on guitars, Nibbs Carter on bass and Nigel Glockler on drums complete the current line-up. Saxon will be playing unforgettable classics and more recent material from Call to Arms. You can read our review of Call to Arms here.

Firefest Friday night Jimi Jamison,Terry Brock,Houston,Serpentine Nottingham Rock City 21st October 2011
Our second visit to the annual festival that is turning into a must see year on year.
First up were Serpentine who set the bar very high as first band on. Led by Matt Black (now the permanent replacement for Tony Mills (Shy,T.N.T.)) and always grinning guitarist Chris Gould, they led us through a half an hour, 6 song set that was a superb showcase for them. Great vocals, backing vocals, keyboards and guitar had everyone enjoying themselves with the band appearing to not believe their luck in being added to the bill. Songs included "Philadelphia", "Cry", "Heartbreak Town" and "Whatever Heartache" with each getting a great response and one that I'm sure all in attendance will be looking out for.
Next up Houston who were like a double cheeseburger with added cheese. Singer Erik (it was on the back of his boxing robe he wore as he came on) has an OK voice but it was all too much posing. He said "you will get more keyboards than you have ever heard" yet he had 2 guitarists who you couldn't hear but had all the shapes. 40 minutes dragged on and when a new song was played they brought on their producer to do backing vocals!! Not enjoyed apart from the 3 loons jumping up and down to every note!!
Next up was Terry Brock who was very well received. With the band Valentine as his back up (Adam Holland on guitar, Gerrard Zappa on bass, Mike Morales on drums and Craig Pulman on keys) we went through a 50 minute set from his back catalogue. We had "Forever Again" from The Sign cd, "I Wanna Love Someone" and "Coming Home" from Back To Eden and then 4 off his latest cd: the title track "Diamond Blue" plus "The Rain", the very heavy "Broken" and "No More Mr Nice Guy" with the Valentine number "Soul Salvation" to end. Loved every minute of it with Terry sounding excellent and some superb guitar playing from Adam Holland too.I wish we could have had more.
Now the man I'd waited 25 years to see. Since buying "Vital Signs"on cassette I've wanted to hear the songs live and at last the time had come. A follow up to last years set (which was now available to buy on dvd at the show), the place was rammed and very, very loud. Backed by Tommy Denander on geetar (producer, player, songwriter et al), Jimmy Jay on bass, Jona Tee on keys (both from the band H.E.A.T.)and Magnus Ulfstedt on drums over the next 75 minutes life was perfect.
They played :
- It's The Singer Not The Song
- Burning Heart
- First Night
- Desperate Dreams
- High On You
- Chasing Euphoria (off the new Kimball/Jamison cd)
- A Dream Too Far
- Blood On Your Money (Cobra number)
- I See You In Everyone
- Oceans
- Rebel Son
- Didn't Know It Was Love
- I'm Always Here
- Eye Of The Tiger
Wonderful stuff. 4 from Vital Signs (I was word perfect!!), 2 from Too Hot To Sleep, plus a newie off the Kimball/Jamison cd (the only one that was a little rough around the edges) the Baywatch theme (with the Firefest crew invading the stage all wearing red Baywatch t shirts and carrying surf boards) and of course 2 Rocky songs and no one cared that Jimi didn't sing or write one of them!! An old Cobra number (Jimi's pre Survivor days band) and great to hear a rarity like "Oceans"too. He sounded great and the crowd sang along to every word. During "Didn't Know It Was Love" Jimi wanted the band to slow down so there could be a singalong but as the crowd continued to sing every word in the end the band had to catch up!!
Great extended solo from Tommy during "I See You In Everyone" too. I could go on all day it was that good.
By all accounts he was even better than last year and Kieran Dargan (one of the organisers) came on to thank Jimi and said "Tonight Rock City has had a new one ripped!!"
I couldn't have put it better myself. Top night and roll on next year.

Exclusive Interview with Joe Satriani
Sometimes little things happen to our humble website that take us by surprise. We've been fans of Joe Satriani since the "Not of This Earth" album way back when. One of us had then spent hours and hours trying to play a recognisable version of Rubina before they realised that they actually ran out of talent after playing the opening few notes.
So when we were recently lucky enough to get a few minutes of the Chickenfoot guitarist's time we couldn't believe our luck. Joe was gracious enough to answer our inane ramblings even though he probably gets hundreds of requests and no doubt has to answer the same questions time and time again...so on behalf of Rockgig and the millions of guitarists who have tried and failed to play along to your albums - Thanks!
I've read a review of the new cd and it said that it feels more of a band now than a project is that how you see it?
… It always feels like a band to me!
Did you approach the new cd any differently to the first one?
… More rockin’, with better songs and better playing.
Did you feel under any more pressure to produce a classic second album? And is that why you called it 3?
… The pressure never changes no matter what number release it is. It always has to be great.
I've read that you feel that the new cd is heavier musically and lyrically to the first why is that?
… We wanted it that way, so, we made sure everything we composed, performed and recorded achieved those goals.
How long did it take to record the new cd?
… Just a few months, February through May of this year.
Where was the new cd recorded? And what equipment did you use?
… It was recorded at Sammy’s studio using an API desk and going into ProTools. John Cuniberti design the system for Mike Fraser to record with. We monitored on NS-10’s with a sub-woofer.
How much do you enjoy fitting in with a band dynamic? And how is it different to your solo music?
… Working with a great singer is very cool. Sammy is fun to collaborate with, and he’s very prolific. I like leaving big spaces in the songs for him to fill up. That leaves me more time to groove with the rhythm section.
It seems that you play in a more song orientated style with Chickenfoot is that your thoughts too?
… It would be silly to play any other way, it’s a rock band!
I read that you wrote the music to "Come Closer"on piano and to Sammy's lyrics which you don't normally do.Why the change for that song and how pleased are you how the song turned out?
… Sammy’s decided to supply me with lyrics first to see if it would work. It worked like a charm. I was very inspired by what he gave me, and used his lyrics to inspire me in a new direction. I am very pleased with how well it turned out.
There is a little B3 organ from Mike Keneally on "Alright Alright"how did that come about?
… I brought Mike in to play on “Come Closer”, “Different Devil”, and “Alright Alright”. He is such a good musician, and always comes up with cool parts. He has been my solo band for the past year and we’re having a great time making music together.
Because of the time pressures you face do you feel that when a new song is recorded quickly that sometimes it is still developing when you play it live?Or is that part of the Chickenfoot magic?
… Albums are always recordings of songs just as they develop. You never really figure songs out until you've taken them on the road for a while. So, I’m used to it now.
There are only 10 songs and about a 45 minute playing time on "3".Do you feel attention spans wane after a certain length of time?
… Just make the record great, never mind the length, or, number of songs. 10 is a good number.
Are there any unused songs left from the sessions?
.. A few…
Kenny Aronoff is Chad's temporary replacement(due to Chad's touring commitments with RHCP) do you feel that the band may lose some of it's live craziness with Chad not being around?
… Have you met Kenny? He’s just as nuts as Chad. I think that’s why Chad suggested. Kenny is a truly awesome drummer.
I see Kenny is on the "Big Foot" video was that a conscious decision to introduce him to the fans?
…Yes.
When will the tour to promote "3"start?
… We will do a webcast performance on the 27th of this month, and a short “road test” tour in November, together with some TV appearances. The real tour will start next spring.
In the UK the new cd is available as part of a fan pack with a magazine and other goodies what do you think of this idea and do you think it could help cd sales as it gives the buying public more?
… It’s good to be able to introduce a new album with great journalism as part of the package. It helps us tell our story more completely, and it gives the fans so much more get into.

Joe, Sammy, Michael and Kenny Aronoff (replacing Chad on drums) will be performing a European Roadtest early next year. Having seen Chickenfoot play live take our word for it - you will not see a better live band.

Joe Bonamassa Hammersmith Apollo 22nd October 2011
Jake Morley was first up. He played a 30 minute acoustic set playing his guitar on his lap strings up and then clipped the back of it to make the percussion sounds. Strange but it worked. He was joined on a double bass by a member of his band .He went down well as the crowd slowly filtered in. That's the trouble of being support and going on 15 minutes early!!
On to the hardest working man on the planet for his second sold out night at Hammersmith. Earlier in the week he had proved to be mortal and had to miss 2 gigs with flu although nothing would stop him playing these shows. He told a good story of how to overcome flu with a bottle and a half of whiskey,2 young ladies and half of Boots's shelves.
He joked later his missus Sandi Thom (as he introduced her) would kill him now anyway.
Over the course of two and a half hours he showed why he is the best guitarist of our generation.
This is what he played:
- Cradle Rock(Rory Gallagher cover)
- When The Fire Hits The Sea
- Midnight Blues(first 3 all played on Rory Gallagher's strat)(Gary Moore cover)
- Slow Train
- Dust Bowl
- Watch Yourself
- Sloe Gin
- Ballad Of John Henry
- Lonesome Road Blues
- Give Me One Reason (with Bernie Marsden and Eilidh Mckellar)
- Blues Deluxe (again with Bernie Marsden and Eilidh Mckellar)
- Song Of Yesterday
- Young Man Blues
- Woke Up Dreaming
- India/Mountain Time
- Encores
- Bird On A Wire(with Sandi Thom)
- Just Got Paid
Superbly backed by his band of Carmine Rojas on bass, Rick Melick on keys and Tal Bergman on drums he mesmerised us with all his styles of playing.
Rock, blues, acoustic - the man can do it all. Some of the interplay with his band as they tried to out do each other was stunning. And great to see them having a blast in fact Joe managed to nearly knocked his glasses off as he tried to restart a song before Tal was ready!!
The man is still a fan and his pleasure in being allowed by Rory Gallagher's family to use one of Rory's old strats was there for all to see. The emotion in his cover of "Cradle Rock" and then Gary Moore's "Midnight Blues" was off the scale and a fitting tribute to 2 of his idols.
The sound on the night was superb and during "Slow Train" I remember thinking this sounds huge and to follow it up with "Dust Bowl" played a lot faster than the recorded version was brilliant.
We had my favourite Joe song a superb "Sloe Gin"where you could have a pin drop during the start of the song and also my favourite Black Country Communion song in the sublime "Song Of Yesterday"!
We had a change to the normal setlist and an introduction. A friend of his had sent him a youtube clip of a young lady playing the Lee Ritenour song "Give Me One Reason" saying she can play it better than Joe could. So he invited 17 year old Eilidh Mckellar from Edinburgh to join him and also his friend Bernie Marsden of Whitesnake too.
I tell you what a star is born Eilidh was fantastic and the interplay between the 3 was brilliant. There is some great youtube footage of this and the next song "Blues Deluxe"too.
After being joined by his missus Sandi Thom for a duet on Bird On A Wire the evening was finished off with a very heavy "Just Got Paid" for which he managed to get the whole place on their feet.I don't like to sit down at gigs but sat in row 2 it was a masterclass and a joy to see at such close quarters and I got a guitar pick at the end too!!!!
So Joe's star continues to ascend and rightly so as he now moves onto arenas in March and April.
A brilliant night out.
10/10.

Bowling For Soup at O2 Academy Oxford - 22nd October 2011
An early start on the Cowley Road in Oxford to see Orange, Suburban Legend and Bowling For Soup.
I knew it was going to be a good gig, when the woman from the O2 slapped an "18?" wristband on me "you'll need this to go out for fag or buy alcohol" she said - "you are over 18 aren't you?" - "Just about" I said as I stood next to my (nearly) 13 year old son and 16 year old daughter. Must be my boyish good looks (a bearded, 46 year old, fat, grey boy obviously).
Met up with my old buddy Mike Hunt (real name - no - really), bought him a pint (thanks to my wristband) and settled down to watch the show... I haven't seen the Academy this full in ages.. it was rammed.
First up - Orange. They suffered with a bad sound mix - I think if I had been able to hear them clearly then they might have been pretty good. Excellent front-man in Joe Dexter (the aforementioned daughter is now stalking him on Facebook as he is "fit") - worked the room as if it was a stadium. Midway through the set the Oxford O2's legendary Arctic Air Conditioning system was cranked up to the max. I genuinely thought the wall behind the bar had blown away - it was frankly f*king freezing.
I thought Orange were good, but Suburban Legend cranked it up another couple of notches. I'd never heard of these guys before but they have to be one of the best party bands on the planet. Take a bit of the B52's mixed with James Brown's moves, Dan Reed Network's funky rock and some high energy ska and you might be somewhere near it. Complete with Flying V guitar, bass, trombone, trumpet and drums they never let up, engaging with the audience , dancing, moving in unison. A surprising highlight was a cover of "I just Can't Wait To Be King" - from The Lion King. Really enjoyed it. Shark Attack Centipede! (if you were there you'll get that!)
I did start to doubt that Bowling For Soup couldn't top Suburban Legends - but I needn't have worried. They rocked the place. I've been a fan for years but only seen the acoustic sets live - which you will know from our reviews are light-hearted affairs, where they often stop mid song to tell a joke or a story. I am very pleased to report that the full electric experience is EXACTLY the same. The gig flew by - I enjoyed every minute of it. I have no idea what they played because I was too busy singing along to make any notes but thanks to setlist.fm their setlist is below. I do remember we had a couple of covers: the Fountains of Wayne song "Stacey's Mom" because "everyone thinks we wrote this song so we decided to steal the shit out of it" and "I wanna be Sedated" from the Ramones. There was also a magnificent version of "Turbulence" in there somewhere. Only BFS would stop mid song for a "musically enhanced bar break" where they went to bar and played Dio over the PA whilst they had a drink, then went back and picked up exactly where they left off. Brilliant.
Loved it.

Chickenfoot III - Review
Chickenfoot 3 is the second cd from the rock supergroup which vocalist Sammy Hagar says is so good that's why they missed out the difficult second cd!!
And do you know what I think? - He's right.
I loved the first cd and was lucky enough to be at the amazing Shepherds Bush gig back in 2009 but this sounds just so good.
It feels like a band this time with not quite so much jamming as they had a little more time to write the songs and dig into an unstoppable groove.
Hagar sounds like a man possessed and the rhythm section of Michael Anthony(bass)and Chad Smith(drums)lay down such a groove and Michael's backing vocals just like his work with Van Halen are just phenomenal. I bet when Van Halen eventually release something they will wish they could go back 10 years!!
Joe Satriani is just stunning on this. He reigns himself in in comparison to his solo work but he is still all over it with riffs and solos from another planet.
Highlights? All of it.
It clocks in around 45 minutes so no over playing - gets in, hits hard and leaves.
"Last Tempation" kicks off with Sammy hollering "I've been a sinner" and you believe him. A big riff and a real kicking rhythm and big chorus and a real statement of intent.
"Alright Alright" is a real rock n'roll number with a real party feel and another huge chorus that has you singing it for days. "Different Devil" slows things down a bit with some wonderful picking from Joe and a real story telling performance from Sammy. This will sound great on the radio and some huge Michael back up vocals.
"Up Next" has a huge stomping riff and groove and will go down a storm live. Sammy tells a story of immortality and arriving at the pearly gates in shades, shorts and flip flops which you know he will.More huge backing vocals and a killer solo from Joe.
"Lighten Up" starts like a Deep Purple before another huge Joe riff kicks in. Joe really takes over with lots of extra guitar all over it alongside the huge riff and another huge chorus. "Come Closer" is the one real ballad and most personal song on the CD. Sammy puts everything into a song that is dedicated to his manager John Carter who passed away during the recording process.
"Three And A Half Letters" is a loud and angry song with Sammy reading/singing out letters that have been sent to him showing people who are homeless, war veterans and have no jobs. When Sammy screams "I Need A Job" during the chorus he means it for these people. A real great groove too from Chad and a great solo from Joe. "Big Foot" is just a perfect rock n'roll song with a great big groove and more big choruses and backing vocals too. "Dubai Blues"is the real bluesy rocker with a huge chorus and more great solo work from Joe. "Something Gone Wrong" starts with Joe on an acoustic and we have such a tuneful bluesy number again with huge backing vocals and a short sharp Joe solo. A truly great song to end on.

Produced wonderfully by Mike Fraser it captures a band who are having fun and have produced a CD I want to listen to again and again....and each time I have a huge smile on my face and that's what it's supposed to be about isn't it?
Roll on Brixton in January!!
Ps Excellent 3d packaging too.

Tonight’s show at the Black Flag in Wakefield is being held in aid of the Ben Manning Music Foundation.
Unfortunately I missed the start of the set by young Leeds based band Black Water, but what I did catch I really enjoyed. Killer from the great five track EP was one my favorites. Black Water are playing some shows in the north of England over the next few weeks so if you get a chance check them out.
Next up were Lockin, to start with I didn’t think they were going to my type of band but I really enjoyed their set. Great fun, and what a body on bass player Ben Dickinson! I believe I’ll be lucky enough to see them again supporting GMT at Bradford Rio’s in November, so looking forward to that.
I had been disappointed the last time I’d seen the Tygers of Pan Tang, when they were plague by a poor sound system. No such problems tonight though as the band took us through a blistering set, that open with Euthanasia. The majority of the set came from the Wildcat, Spellbound and Crazy Nights albums, but we also had input from the recent Animal Instinct CD in the shape of Hot Blooded and If You See Kay, and it was good to see that they got a good reception from the crowd. Highlight of the evening for me was a rocking version of Suzie Smiled. The evening was brought to the end with … of course.. Love Potion Number 9.
Three great bands, for ten quid and for a good cause as well, not a bad value Friday night out.
