Muse – Sheffield Arena -Wednesday 4th November 2009

Muse. Anyone who’s anyone will know this name. And anyone with a good taste in music will have at least one of their albums and if they’re really lucky; will have seen them live. Lucky for me this was my 4th time of seeing them but it seemed like the 1st.
From what I’ve heard/researched the support act was a band called ‘The Big Pink’. I don’t know for sure as i was unfortunate enough to miss them due to really bad parking at the arena. Be warned, if you plan on going to the arena them plan ahead parking is really bad... ask anyone who went to the gig and they’ll agree with me.
Still, we didn’t miss Muse. Once the lights dimmed all we could see on stage was three huge blocks covered with cloth that had projections on and music in the background. After 3 or so minutes of this the cloths fell to reveal three podiums upon which were the three members of Muse who began the show with Uprising. These podiums as well as holding the band, were covered in screens which allowed us to see the band close up or watch weird projections. After a few songs in, the podiums began to lower so that front man Mathew and bassist Chris could belt out another song while using the space of the stage; leaving drummer Dom up on the huge box.
As expected, the light show was basically amazing: Lights, lasers and screens flashing all over the shop. They were almost as important as the band themselves. As well as playing practically all of their new album, The Resistance, they played a lot of old favourites for their long term fans and even Chris and Dom played a few special instrumentals; whilst both on a spinning podium. During Plug In Baby they released their signature balloon balls into the crowd who thoroughly enjoyed them. Those Muse guys never cease to amaze me.
Be sure to check out youtube videos of the gig; it’s not quite the same as being there, but it’s still great entertainment.
