The White Elephant

Hailing from Iowa in the USA, The White Elephant are a three piece that doesn’t include a Bass player. They are up of Ron Coleman (Vocal/Rhythm Guitar), Tim Coleman (Drums) and Chris Rohr (Lead Guitar/Vocals). This lack of Bass does provide a slightly quirky, but yet enjoyable sound on this, their debut self titled CD, which is very hard to categories.

 The White Elephant
The CD opens with two simple, great catchy tunes, Sinner and Travel by Boat, the latter has hints of very early AC/DC tracks. There is a change of pace for Last Night Stand with a slower but equally catchy riff which has a bit of an Oasis sound. We are back to a fast rift for the instantly likable Run Away. The pace carries on with The Trouble which follows the instrumental intro before the pace slows down for a couple of numbers Every Word and Into the Fire, which like the rest of the CD have some really clever strong lyrics. Devil Dreaming is the weakest track amongst this strong selection of songs but not to worry because close on it’s heals comes the excellent Swamp Song which has great distortion effect and a rift somewhere between Rock n Roll Part II and The Zoo.
The CD closes with a great acoustic number, Mouthful, which contrasting style brings everything to a close with the great line of “good night farewell, we hope to see you again”.

I understand that the CD was recorded in “live” takes in two and half days and I think that has help captured the excitement of the band on these recordings.

I imagine that the band would be great live, especially after a few beers to get the party started.

I believe the band start the recording process for a new CD in May/June 2012 and we shall be keeping an eye open for it here at Rockgig.
