King King / Dan Patlansky Gloucester Guildhall 18-05-16

A new venue for me tonight and a trip to Gloucester to see 2 of the hottest draws on the blues block touring together and with a very healthy size crowd for a mid week and everyone turned up early as you don't get a support act as good as Dan Patlansky and his band every day of the week.

I have been fortunate enough to see him on several occasions and it was fantastic to see how the crowd acclaim grew as each song ended.
Focussing mainly on his recently released superb new cd IntroVertigo his 35 minute set flew past and here is what he played.

Sonova Faith
Loose Up The Grip
Fetch Your Spade
Stop The Messin'
Still Wanna Be Your Man
Heart Beat
Backbite
My Chana

Now extended to a 4 piece with the addition of a  keyboardist Dean Berrett who added a real depth to the material and filled in the gaps when Dan was soloing. With Clint Falconer on bass and Andy Maritz laying down a rock steady back line it gives Dan centre stage to show us his extraordinary talents.
Sonova Faith is an excellent opener with the band so tight and the dynamics of the song really to the fore.Huge guitar riff and drum thump and how the guitar riff kicks in and out leads to a real heaviness with the light and shade superb.Dan's vocal shows that he has really worked on this side of his talents too with an excellent tone range and power. And of course the first of many outstanding guitar work out's with his style sitting somewhere between Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn and always with the feel of it being close to feedback but always in control.

Loosen Up The Grip had a piano start with Dan doing some beautiful guitar pickings showing a real deft touch and a superb raw vocal in the verse and as the chorus builds too.

Fetch Your Spade from breakthrough cd Dear Silence Thieves was a real stomper with Clint's bass line rumbling through the venue's foundations.

Stop The Messin' sees the band have some real fun on the funky little number with the band dynamics again impressing in the groove of the song and Dan's wonderful solo leaving jaw's on the floor.

Still Wanna Be Your Man is Dan's favourite part of the show he tells us with a slow bluesy song with the chance for him to show off that he has a real soul and a passion for the genre with a lengthy mid song guitar solo that again isn't all about how many notes you play but how you play them.

Backbite from Dear Silence Thieves has a monster groove before his show stopper ending in My Chana where he takes his guitar on a journey to within an inch of it's life has the crowd bellowing for more.I had seen it before and seeing people mesmerised as they watch it for the first time was fantastic.

Dan Patlansky and his band have headline dates of their own shortly and you need to go and see them.

King King seem to be permanently on the road with last year's stand out album Reaching For The Light now having been out for a year.
With more and more awards piling up for the band they will soon need an extra mantle piece and there are no signs of road fever as for 90 minutes they take us through a career defining set showing why they are the new kings on the blues scene.

Here is what they played.
Lose Control
Wait On Time
Waking Up
Rush Hour
A Long History Of Love
More Than I Can Take
You Stopped The Rain
Jealousy
Crazy
All Your Life
Stranger To Love
Encore of Let Love In/Old Love

All eyes are on the man (Alan Nimmo) centre stage resplendent in a red kilt and he was simply amazing with a display of breath taking vocal and guitar playing with an emotion and soul which I have not witnessed many better in 35 years of gig going.

Lose Control off the debut album was a great opener as Alan shows off his bluesier side and the first of many guitar solo's played with a fire of man who loves his work.I loved how as he played the solo's he would look along the sea of faces watching him in awe and taking something from everyone present.

The band give a wonderful base for Alan to do his thing. The rhythm team of Lindsay Coulson on bass and Wayne Proctor on drums are rock solid and Bob Fridzema on Hammond organ was sensational. So good to have a great sound where you could hear everyone and the Hammond work from Bob was a good as I can remember seeing.

A Long History Of Love had a lengthy Hammond solo where Bob had centre stage so to speak before Alan then started a guitar solo that was taken down to a whisper where you could have heard a pin drop before it built like a crescendo as the band came together.

Rush Hour is a classic in the making from the keys intro with Alan's soulful vocal lines and the big chorus and of course the lengthy guitar solo dripping with emotion in every note.

A very personal song about his brother's fight with illness in You Stopped The Rain took Alan's impassioned vocal to new heights where you can see how he has poured his thoughts into song.Fantastic.

Crazy shows off the band's funkier side with Lindsay's bass a feature and gives a new feel to the set.

Set closer Stranger to Love is a monster of a song.Again the whole band groove shines through with Wayne's powerful drumming it's backbone and another great chorus. It broods and it shimmers and is a perfect introduction to anyone to how good King King are.

Let Love In from the debut cd had a drum solo start and a crowd sing along participation piece too with every band member showing with their huge smiles how much they had taken out of the evening.

After a quick chat with Dan Patlansky on the way out we left thinking how the new wave of blues is blowing through to a new generation and how the 2 wonderful acts on this bill will be right at the front of the queue.

Superb.
